History Of Steppin' Out Academy Of Performance
Steppin' Out was founded in 1991 by Principal Angela Harris. Originally based at Hamworthy Liberal Hall the school moved to St Michael's Church Hall and finally to its existing location at Carter Community Sports College, Hamworthy in 1995. Due to demand Steppin' Out opened a branch in Bournemouth and in 2008 Steppin' Out opened in Ringwood at Poulner Infant School.
What Training The Academy Offers
- I.S.T.D Ballet: Recognised by all the top dance colleges. A syllabi to stretch the pupil and challenge independent learning.
- I.S.T.D. Modern: A West End style of dance with links to contemporary & street jazz.
- I.S.T.D. Tap: Exciting tap grades to produce the top standard.
- Jazz: Free jazz classes to advance the students and prepare them for audition techniques.
- Singing: Group lessons to encourage confidence and increase portfolios.
- MTC Squad: Group lessons to prepare for the world of cabaret and musical theatre.
- Full - Time Performing Arts Programme: Separate details available.
- Teacher training at FDI & CDE level: Separate details available.
- Opportunities to perform: Students have the chance to perform in shows, demonstrations and displays. Steppin' Out has its own cabaret troupe that perform regularly in the professional world giving valuable experience.
- Competition & Festival Work: Allowing more experience and giving the pupil's confidence & audition skills.
The Staff
Principal: Angela Harris L.I.S.T.D
Angela was trained at Bush Davies and went on to dance professionally appearing internationally. Having already won many awards during her training for her choreography she went on to qualify as a teacher for the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
Angela spent a year in Bermuda both teaching and choreographing including a performance for Irena Baronova at Bermuda's premier theatre. On her return to England the school continued to flourish and she has choreographed for pantomimes, corporate events and holiday parks. Angela has worked with influential people in the theatre and showbiz world such as Alvin Stardust, Roy Hudd, Billy Dainty, Judy Nunn and Jeremy Spake to name but a few.
Angela is now a recognised tutor for the new teaching qualifications and holds the Licentiate quaification in ballet and modern.
Teacher: Naomi Macnicol
Naomi was trained locally and spent a year in Australia teaching at a top dance school.
Student Teacher: Megan Brewer-Smith
Megan has been with the Academy since the age of 5. She has received outstanding exam marks and has had vast experience performing nationally. Megan has been awarded a place at Laine Theatre Arts.
